Meet Our Speakers

Expert Speaker: Karisa Schreck, MD, PhD

Karisa C. Schreck, MD, PhD, is a neuro-oncologist, co-director of the BRAF Brain Tumor Center at Johns Hopkins, and a translational clinician-scientist whose research focuses on developing molecularly guided therapies for glioma and other primary brain tumors.

Dr. Schreck’s research program is centered on understanding how oncogenic signaling pathways drive brain tumor growth, treatment resistance, and therapeutic vulnerability. By defining how pathways such as BRAF/MAPK/ERK can be molecularly controlled, her work aims to identify rational targeted therapies and combination strategies for patients with glioma. This integrated training across neurology, neuro-oncology, and translational cancer biology positions her to move discoveries from the laboratory into biomarker-driven clinical trials for patients with difficult-to-treat brain tumors.

Community Member Speaker: Carmen Caffey

Carmen is a 35-year-old former registered nurse turned full-time stay-at-home mom to two little boys. After initial testing suggested a high-grade glioma, advanced molecular testing and methylation profiling ultimately revealed a rare ZFTA-fusion ependymoma. Outside of family life, she is an avid reader, puzzle and game enthusiast, sunset lover, and live music fan.

Today, Carmen uses her experience as both a health care professional and a patient to highlight the vital importance of advanced biomarker testing and patient advocacy.

Upcoming Webinars: Let’s Talk About Biomarker Testing Reports and Enrolling in Clinical Trials

This fall, join us for two free MyTumorID webinars designed to help patients and caregivers learn about biomarker testing reports (Oct. 2) and enrolling in clinical trials (Oct. 23). Each session offers expert knowledge and resources to help you ask questions, get more information about your tumor, understand your treatment options, and make informed decisions.
