In 2022, my life took an unexpected turn. Despite being the epitome of health at 68 — never drinking, smoking, or straying from my daily gym routine and healthy diet — a grand mal seizure in the middle of the night unveiled a large meningioma tumor on the left side of my face.
Diagnosed as Atypical Meningioma, WHO Grade 2, the tumor’s presence was as much a surprise as it was a challenge, necessitating a complex left orbit zygomatic craniotomy. Remarkably, 90% of the tumor was removed, with 33 subsequent radiation treatments targeting the remnants.
My story is not just about the physical ordeal but the incredible journey of recovery, underscored by the strength drawn from fitness, a positive mindset, and the unwavering support of my partner and medical team. The University of Miami Hospital’s top neuro-specialist surgeon spearheaded my treatment, removing the tumor and setting the stage for my recovery and ongoing management, including regular MRI scans to monitor any changes.
Despite the severity of my diagnosis, my recovery has been nothing short of miraculous. Just two weeks post-operation, my surgeon was pleased with my progress, attributing much of it to my pre-diagnosis health. My journey even allowed for a recuperative vacation, which included a rejuvenating cruise through Scotland, Norway, and Iceland.
The radiation therapy, though daunting with its 33 sessions and the creation of a custom mask to immobilize my head, was tackled with the same resilience that has defined my life. The side effects were minimal, and the therapy’s success was confirmed through regular MRI scans, showing promising results and allowing for an extended period between consultations.
As I share my story in 2024, after my seventh MRI showed encouraging outcomes, it’s not just the physical scars that have healed but also a profound sense of gratitude and a renewed perspective on life. Returning to my teaching roles at several universities, where I inspire future leaders in technology, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence, my experience has imbued my work and life philosophy with deeper meaning.
My journey through battling a brain tumor is more than a personal victory; it’s a testament to the power of health, resilience, and the human spirit. To those facing their battles, know that you are not alone. You can face the challenges ahead with strength within you and with support, determination, and care.
