National Brain Tumor Society (NBTS), a leading nonprofit dedicated to the brain tumor community in the United States, recently expanded the expertise and leadership of its Board of Directors with the addition of three new members with diverse backgrounds spanning corporate strategy, marketing and consumer insights, and research and medical treatment of brain tumors.
Joining the NBTS Board, which is responsible for oversight and governance of the organization, are:
- Dr. Edjah Nduom – Neurosurgical oncologist and head of the Brain Tumor Immunology Laboratory in the Surgical Neurology Branch (SNB) of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
- Amy Fenton – A global marketing executive
- Michael Smith – Vice President of Corporate Strategy for Lockheed Martin
“We are excited to welcome Edjah, Amy, and Michael to the NBTS Board of Directors,” said David Arons, Chief Executive Officer, National Brain Tumor Society. “All three are highly accomplished professionals in their respective fields, and are equally driven by personal convictions to help NBTS achieve our vision to conquer and cure brain tumors once and for all. They will make great additions to our team.”
Dr. Nduom, a rising star in the neuro-oncology field, joined the NIH in 2015. In addition to his clinical role in the Surgical Neurology Branch, Dr. Nduom studies the use of immunotherapy for the treatment of brain tumors, including leading innovative early-phase clinical trials to test new immunotherapeutic approaches in glioblastoma patients. He is a member of the executive committee of the Joint Tumor Section of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS). He also serves as the Chair of the Young Neurosurgeons Committee of AANS and as a Founding Steering Committee member of the Society for Neuro-Oncology (SNO) Sub-Saharan Africa. In addition to AANS, CNS, and SNO, Dr. Nduom is a member of the American Medical Association, National Medical Association, and Society for Immunotherapy in Cancer. Dr. Nduom has already participated in NBTS initiatives, including the organization’s Research Roundtable program.
Amy Fenton has more than 25 years of experience in the global marketing field, specializing in strategic market planning, demand-based growth strategies, branding, and transformation. Mrs. Fenton spent the last two years as Chief Marketing Officer for Ipsos North America leading internal and external marketing and communications, while also managing strategic client relationships in the US market. While she was still in college, Amy lost her beloved mother to a malignant brain tumor in 1988, less than 9 months after being diagnosed. She was 44 years old. Amy has hit the ground running with the National Brain Tumor Society, as a member of our Gray Nation Endurance team, by putting ‘meaning behind her miles’, for the upcoming 2019 New York City Marathon.
Michael Smith serves as Vice President of Strategic Planning for Lockheed Martin, a global security and aerospace company. In this role, Michael oversees the development of critical actions and strategic decisions that will sustain and generate long-term business growth for the corporation. Mr. Smith began his career in the military as a Nuclear-trained Surface Warfare Officer in the United States Navy. Mr. Smith’s wife, Annie, proud mother of the couple’s three boys, was diagnosed with an ependymoma brain tumor in 2001. Thankfully, Annie has benefitted from cutting-edge therapies, state-of-the-art monitoring, and well-coordinated treatment and care advice. “All three are critical to successful outcomes,” Mike contends. “We are thankful for the role NBTS plays – often behind the scenes – in support of the many lives impact by brain tumors.”
