Head to the Hill Testimonials

Head to the Hill is an empowering event that brings volunteer advocates together from around the country to urge policymakers to take action. The day of training is designed to connect participants with other advocates in their district or state, effectively share their stories, and help make progress on the Hill on behalf of the brain tumor community. But don’t take our word for it;, watch and read the testimonials below to learn more about why participants return year after year.

Advocacy has a different feel than fundraising. It’s way less intimidating than you think. You’re not sitting in a congressional hearing getting peppered with questions. You’re just telling your story. These people are just regular people. They want to hear from you — that’s their job. Our stories resonate with people. You’ll feel great about yourself when you’re done. You leave these meetings saying, ‘I just helped to push the agenda that could potentially raise millions of dollars.’

People may worry that their story won’t make a difference at Head to the Hill. But everyone’s story is impactful in some way. Everyone’s story matters. The stories are what are going to bring about change. At Head to the Hill, you’re going to find a supportive environment of people who will welcome you with open arms. I was sitting in these meetings and realized where my story could be useful and how it directly related to the bills we were advocating for. It’s become something I look forward to every year with my mom. We’ve made special memories visiting the National Mall, the White House, and museums like the Holocaust Museum.

The goal of the day is for the patients or caregivers to tell their sI was apprehensive going in. On the first day, meeting people and learning about what we were there for was great. I call myself a Petri dish because my tumor is so rare. But when I went to Head to the Hill, and I met people who actually had my surgery done in the same area, it made me feel normal because they had the same symptoms I had or were dealing with the same stuff I am at this point. If you’re passionate about brain tumors and want to learn more and get involved, Head to the Hill is a great place to do it. You’re going to meet amazing people you can bond with and who have gone through the same thing you’ve gone through. I would encourage you to tell your story because people want to hear it, and it has an impact on our representatives, our senators, and the people involved.

Through NBTS, I’ve found such a profound sense of community. Having that shared unique experience with others has been helpful for me in my healing and grieving journey. And from the moment I arrived [at Head to the Hill], I didn’t feel alone. There’s such a warmth in the NBTS community. Extroverts will help bring you in, and the way the event is structured really sets you up for success. You get a full day of prep, you meet the other advocates from your state, and you learn how the meetings will run. NBTS’s Head to the Hill event gives you the space and the platform to talk about what matters and what we’d like to see done about it.
