My name is Dave Fitchik, and I am 36 years old. In July of 2019, while working as an NYPD police officer, I suffered a seizure while at work. Completely losing consciousness and signs of life, I was resuscitated by my partner and immediately rushed to the emergency room.
After being stabilized, I underwent a series of scans and tests. Upon completion, the results showed a brain tumor. Results from a biopsy, which was conducted the following week, showed the tumor to be a stage 4 glioblastoma. Successful tumor resection was completed in August 2019. Follow-up care was radiation and chemotherapy. I also participated in a voluntary clinical immunotherapy trial while continuing to receive follow-up MRIs.
In January 2025, I received a routine MRI, which was clear. In June 2025, another follow-up MRI was conducted, which showed an abnormal mass in the frontal cortex. A biopsy was scheduled for July 2025, which, after extensive pathology testing, revealed a radiation-induced sarcoma.
Surgery was scheduled a week later, which was successful, and as much of the tumor as possible was removed. Proton therapy was determined to be the best course of treatment post surgery and is scheduled to begin mid-September 2025.
Even with being diagnosed with two tumors and having five surgeries, I do not let my diagnoses affect my daily life. I still enjoy running and working out, going on vacation, and spending time with my family. I am positive I will be able to enjoy a long life filled with happiness and countless memories.
