Losing My Father

Published on August 2, 2016 in Share Your Story

My father was diagnosed with what they thought was a benign brain tumor in early January 2016. However, he started to progressively lose his mobility on his left side until he could no longer walk without someone’s assistance. In late February/early March 2016, we were told that the doctors at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NYC thought that surgery was the best option so that they could determine what type of tumor we were dealing with. He had surgery on March 9th. However, the tumor could not be removed because of its location (there was a risk for paralyzation). We were told that my father had the most aggressive form of malignant brain tumor: glioblastoma multiforme. After a round of radiation and chemotherapy, my father began physical, occupational, and speech therapy for many weeks. However, he was slowly deteriorating. At the same time, he was doing more chemo. He was discharged from the therapists on Wednesday, July 13, 2016. He was hospitalized on Sunday, July 17, 2016 because he was not eating and slept the majority of the day. He had internal bleeding and a touch of pneumonia. My father passed away on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at the age of 60 years old.
