My Mother Lives On But So Does the Trauma

Published on December 11, 2023 in Share Your Story

Guest Author: Melissa M. in Arizona

My mother, Nancy Lakin, lost her life to glioblastoma in her late fifties. Although she technically passed away on July 27, 2012, the mother and person we knew had already died during her excruciating two-year battle with this awful disease.

The fearful memory loss, the startling personality changes, the hopeful clinical trials that required ruthless chemotherapy and radiation, the two major brain surgeries and recovery, the constant confusion, the sudden inability to care for herself, the terrifying seizures, and the loss of facilities that consumed her throughout her fight. I would not wish this terrible disease on anyone, and I truly hope breakthroughs will be made in the near future.
