National Brain Tumor Society Comments on President Biden’s ARPA-H Proposal

Published on April 9, 2021 in Press Release

National Brain Tumor Society’s (NBTS) chief executive officer David Arons, JD, today released the following statement on President Joe Biden’s Announcement of an ‘ARPA’ project for health:

“NBTS applauds President Biden’s ongoing determination to fight cancer through medical research, as underscored today in his administration’s discretionary funding request for Fiscal Year 2022. The proposed creation of an ARPA-H program — and one with an initial focus on cancer — is historic. This is the type of innovative approach that could potentially lead to urgently-needed treatments that can transform the lives of patients with serious illnesses, including brain tumors.

New strategies like an ARPA-H program are necessary in order to build upon our ongoing efforts to improve quality of life and increase survival rates for the approximately 700,000 Americans living with a primary brain tumor and thousands more living with metastatic brain cancer. Malignant primary brain tumor patients have a combined average five-year relative survival rate of only 36 percent, and these tumors have become the number one cause of cancer death in children and young adults, so today’s funding request comes as welcome news for our community.

As ARPA-H evolves, the project will require significant stakeholder engagement and collaboration. NBTS has a long-standing history of working with the Executive Branch and Congress to advance novel policies that will improve the lives of people with brain tumors. We stand ready to work with the Biden Administration and Congress on a national strategy that maximizes all existing funding sources and research programs across federal agencies, and that leverages the new ARPA-H initiatives to improve quality of life and develop cures.”
