One Step Closer

The photos from my wedding in October 2006 are some of the last pictures I have of my mother before she was diagnosed with glioblastoma. She was given 10 months to live, far exceeding her prognosis living 23 months, then passing away in February 2009.

She received treatment under Carolina Neurosurgery and Spine Associates (Charlotte, NC) doctors and staff, had one resection surgery, and participated in 2 separate clinical trials…one which ultimately would later become an FDA-approved medication for GBMs. She left a legacy to all who loved her and throughout her journey her sarcasm never wavered.

I’ve been a runner ever since her diagnosis and after her death, I dreamed of starting a foundation that would honor her as I ran — “One Step Closer” — though it never became a reality. While I wouldn’t ever wish this experience upon anyone, I feel privileged to have such a deep connection to a movement that desperately needs growth and I have hope that one day there will be a treatment that can preserve the quality of life of GBM patients.
