Atlanta, GA – National Brain Tumor Society, the largest patient advocacy organization in the United States committed to curing brain tumors and improving the lives of patients and families, will host the inaugural 2023 Georgia Brain Tumor Walk & Race at The Battery – Atlanta on June 3, 2023. Hundreds of local volunteers and participants—including patients, survivors, caregivers, families and friends, research scientists, medical providers, and local businesses—will walk and run for a critical cause: conquering and curing brain tumors once and for all.
This family-friendly event supports, honors, and remembers all Georgia residents who have been affected by the more than 100 types of brain tumors — all of which can be devastating and debilitating, and many of which can be deadly. Proceeds raised from this event will help the National Brain Tumor Society deliver on its mission to discover a cure, deliver effective treatments, and advocate for patients and caregivers.
The event comes on the heels of Georgia Governor Brian Kemp proclaiming May as Brain Tumor Awareness Month in Georgia, thanks to the hard work of volunteer advocates with the National Brain Tumor Society.
“National Brain Tumor Society is thrilled to launch our first-ever signature event in Georgia,” said David Arons, President and Chief Executive Officer. “Our desire to create an opportunity for the brain tumor community in Georgia to come together as one is because of the dedicated advocates, supporters, and volunteers that we work with from the area. Including individuals and organizations, like our generous sponsors, Emory Winship Cancer Institute, and our media partner, WSB-TV, many members of the brain tumor community in Georgia expressed significant interest in having a venue to unite all those in the region who’ve been impacted by a brain tumor to honor, remember, and commemorate the shared experience of facing this devastating disease. We’re looking forward to seeing this passionate group join together in Atlanta, especially in light of Governor Kemp’s proclamation, marking Georgia’s investment in raising awareness for brain tumors.”
Event organizers expect more than 500 to attend with a goal of raising more than $100,000 for the cause. Registration begins at 7:00am with opening ceremonies and the 5k starting at 8:30am.
For individuals unable to attend in person, a virtual registration option is available.
More than 90,000 individuals in the U.S. will receive a primary brain tumor diagnosis in 2023, and nearly 19,000 Americans are estimated to die because of brain cancer this year. Brain tumors are the leading cause of cancer-related death in children 19-years-old and younger, accounting for three out of every 10 cancer deaths. More so than any other cancer, a brain tumor can have life-altering psychological, cognitive, behavioral, and physical effects. There are no known prevention or early detection methods, few available treatments, and there is no cure.
