A Journey Through Resilience: My Battle with a Brain Tumor

In 2022, my life took an unexpected turn. Despite being the epitome of health at 68 — never drinking, smoking, or straying from my daily gym routine and healthy diet — a grand mal seizure in the middle of the night unveiled a large meningioma tumor on the left side of my face.

Diagnosed as Atypical Meningioma, WHO Grade 2, the tumor’s presence was as much a surprise as it was a challenge, necessitating a complex left orbit zygomatic craniotomy. Remarkably, 90% of the tumor was removed, with 33 subsequent radiation treatments targeting the remnants.

My story is not just about the physical ordeal but the incredible journey of recovery, underscored by the strength drawn from fitness, a positive mindset, and the unwavering support of my partner and medical team. The University of Miami Hospital’s top neuro-specialist surgeon spearheaded my treatment, removing the tumor and setting the stage for my recovery and ongoing management, including regular MRI scans to monitor any changes.

Despite the severity of my diagnosis, my recovery has been nothing short of miraculous. Just two weeks post-operation, my surgeon was pleased with my progress, attributing much of it to my pre-diagnosis health. My journey even allowed for a recuperative vacation, which included a rejuvenating cruise through Scotland, Norway, and Iceland.

The radiation therapy, though daunting with its 33 sessions and the creation of a custom mask to immobilize my head, was tackled with the same resilience that has defined my life. The side effects were minimal, and the therapy’s success was confirmed through regular MRI scans, showing promising results and allowing for an extended period between consultations.

As I share my story in 2024, after my seventh MRI showed encouraging outcomes, it’s not just the physical scars that have healed but also a profound sense of gratitude and a renewed perspective on life. Returning to my teaching roles at several universities, where I inspire future leaders in technology, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence, my experience has imbued my work and life philosophy with deeper meaning.

My journey through battling a brain tumor is more than a personal victory; it’s a testament to the power of health, resilience, and the human spirit. To those facing their battles, know that you are not alone. You can face the challenges ahead with strength within you and with support, determination, and care.

2025 Update:

As 2024 unfolded, I encountered another unexpected chapter — proof that life writes its sequels. My eighth MRI revealed renewed tumor growth, this time with the complexity of regrowth at the original site and the emergence of a second mass. Once again, I faced a difficult road ahead, but I approached it with the same determination and trust in my extraordinary medical team. A second emergency craniotomy was performed with precision, and this time, a second procedure followed: the highly intricate endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA), requiring two specialist surgeons to access the tumor behind my eye, deep in the base of the skull. Though the surgery resulted in the complete loss of vision in my left eye, it also removed the bulk of the recurring tumor and opened the door to a new phase of healing.

Recovery was far from easy, but resilience became my rhythm. I resumed my gym visits, returned to teaching at four universities, and deepened my commitment to living a vibrant and meaningful life. Despite this significant change in vision, I adapted quickly. With the support of incredible neuro-ophthalmologists and rehabilitation teams at the University of Miami, I discovered new ways to navigate the world — both literally and professionally — with confidence. I was placed on an advanced treatment plan that includes immunotherapy using Keytruda and hormone therapy with testosterone. These innovations in care are helping suppress further tumor activity while supporting my overall vitality.

As I approach my 72nd birthday, I remain full-time in academia, teaching cutting-edge courses in AI and cybersecurity, mentoring students, and staying ahead in a fast-moving world. I travel, stay active, and live with the same joyful energy that defined my life before diagnosis. My story, now spanning years, surgeries, treatments, and transformations, is not one of loss but of victory. I have lost an eye, but gained a broader vision for life — one that sees through gratitude, perseverance, and purpose.

This next chapter affirms not just survival but thriving. I continue to advocate for early detection, healthy living, and staying engaged in the world, regardless of the obstacles. To anyone facing a journey with meningioma or any chronic challenge, know this: it is possible not just to endure but to grow stronger, to reinvent, and to inspire.
