National Brain Tumor Society (NBTS) Statement on 2021 Glioblastoma Awareness Day Resolution in U.S. Senate and House of Representatives

Published on May 13, 2021 in Press Release

National Brain Tumor Society (NBTS) is proud to announce its endorsement of a bipartisan, bicameral resolution passed in the United States Senate and introduced in the House of Representatives. The resolution designates July 21, 2021, as Glioblastoma (GBM) Awareness Day, raising public awareness for glioblastoma, a highly aggressive and deadly form of brain cancer.

In the Senate, the resolution is championed by sponsor Lindsey Graham (R-SC), with the support of Senators Ed Markey (D-MA), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), Mark Kelly (D-AZ), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Chris Coons (D-DE), and Raphael Warnock (D-GA). Brian Mast (R-FL-18), Jan Schakowsky (D-IL-9), Jim Langevin (D-RI-2), and Mike Gallagher (R-WI-08) are spearheading the effort in the House of Representatives.

The following is a statement from David F. Arons, JD, chief executive officer of the National Brain Tumor Society:

“Glioblastoma (GBM) Awareness Day shines a light on one of cancer’s darkest corners.

Glioblastoma is the most common, complex, treatment-resistant, and deadliest type of brain cancer, and it can affect anyone, at any age. The five-year relative survival rate is only 7.2% and median survival is only 8 months.

Following the successive passings of Senator Edward “Ted” Kennedy, Beau Biden, and Senator John McCain from GBM, NBTS has been proud to work with a bipartisan, bicameral group in Congress to share the realities of this devastating disease with the nation and raise awareness that will drive the support needed to defeat this cancer.

We thank all of the sponsor’s of this year’s Glioblastoma Awareness Day resolutions, and look forward to working with our champions in Congress to remember those who are no longer with us, to support survivors and their loved ones, and to honor luminaries working toward a cure and better quality of life for those who are living with this disease.”

National Brain Tumor Society spearheaded this annual event in 2019, and we will not stop until we cast a national light on this devastating disease and conquer and cure GBM— once and for all. Join us at braintumor.org and GBMawarenessDay.org
