National Brain Tumor Society Statement on 2023 State of the Union Address

Published on February 8, 2023 in Press Release

National Brain Tumor Society (NBTS), the nation’s largest nonprofit dedicated to defeating brain tumors and improving the lives of patients with brain tumors, commends President Joe Biden for continuing to put cancer patients and cancer research at the forefront of the national public policy discussion.

During his 2023 State of the Union address, the president once again discussed his administration’s plans to “end cancer as we know it.” NBTS Chief Executive Officer, and former member of the Blue Ribbon Panel assembled to advise then-Vice President Biden’s initial Cancer Moonshot program, David Arons released the following statement in reaction to last night’s speech:

“We fully support the Biden administration’s goal of ending cancer as we know it. We have been encouraged by the progress made to date with the launch of signature programs and initiatives like a new Advance Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) and funding to help stand-up cancer clinical trial networks, promote patient navigation services, and strengthen rare and recalcitrant cancers such as certain types of brain tumors.

“Embracing the fight against cancer as a bipartisan issue that everyone can agree on, President Biden continues to shine a light on the progress needed to drastically reduce the toll this collection of diseases inflicts on countless Americans.

“Patients with brain tumors and their loved ones are waiting for better treatments, a better quality of life, and cures. Patients, caregivers, researchers, government officials, and health care providers must work together to disrupt the status quo and invest in promising treatments and technology to achieve these life-saving outcomes. As such, we look forward to continuing to work with the President, First Lady, administration, and Congress to advance policies that will benefit brain tumor and all cancer patients and their families.”
