Brain Tumor Awareness Month (BTAM) in 2017 was all about taking action together. To many in the brain tumor community, awareness isn’t the sole issue, it’s finding ways to connect raising the profile of this disease with getting people take action. At the National Brain Tumor Society, we wanted to provide you with activities and facts to share with your families and friends this month and bring more people to the cause. And you, the community, have answered in spades.
From our time on Capitol Hill, where 308 advocates from 38 different states came together to lobby Congress on behalf of the brain tumor community; to the corresponding Congressional Action Day when more than 1,000 letters, calls, and tweets were sent to members of Congress; to the thousands in attendance at various brain tumor walks, rides, and races, you came out in force to support your brothers and sisters in the cause.
We asked you to be a member of our #BTeAM, and you responded. But there’s still work to be done. The work we did with Congress to support NIH and NCI funding is in jeopardy. Please sign the petition to protect the necessary medical research we need, not only for our disease, but for the millions of other people dealing with terminal illnesses for which there are no cures.
Also, we are continuing to fund research, and with these proposed cuts, we can’t pick up the slack alone. Help us raise money for scientists in our various initiatives to keep their work going. With all of the recent research highlights, we have no trouble showing how your dollars are put into action.
Speaking of fundraising for research, NBTS would like to thank Zallie Family Shoprite stores, located in Southern New Jersey and Philadelphia for their support once again during Brain Tumor Awareness Month. During the month of the May, each of the 11 stores owned and operated by the Zallie Family, participated in a change “round-up” campaign. In 31 days, over $90,000 was raised for vital brain tumor research and advocacy efforts. Thank you again to all those in the community who opted to “round up” their purchase during the month of May and a HUGE thank you to the Zallie Family for their relentless support!
We have felt #graytful to read positive feedback and to see so many members of the community, and to see people using that same hashtag to let us know who and what they are thankful for while we continue the fight against brain tumors.
